We were given the information for Smardan-Hatcher from AO Smith as an authorized retailer to get a replacement tankless hot water heater. We called and spoke with Danny, the manager of the store, and explained that he had an authorization number from AO Smith for a free replacement hot water heater and wanted to make sure that they would honor the authorization number for a free replacement before we drove an hour to get there. Danny told us the store would honor the auth#, so we drove to the the store. However, when we arrived Danny told us that we had to pay for the unit in full (almost $700), plus a $50 service charge; and then in 3-4 weeks after they received the warranty money from the manufacturer, they would refund us for the unit, but NOT the $50 service fee.

I understand the policy is in place because they don't want product walking out of the store, but that policy should have been disclosed to us when we called prior to arriving, when we were told that they would honor the FREE warranty replacement with the authorization number. I explained to Danny why I was upset that it wasn't disclosed to us upfront, and offered to pay for the unit until he was reimbursed from the manufacturer; but that I wouldn't pay for the service fee for a FREE replacement from the manufacturer since he hadn't disclosed that to us when we spoke earlier. He was entirely unhelpful, and without remorse for deceiving us that we would receive a warranty replacement just to get us into the store before disclosing the details.

I found that Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting in Santa Barbara was MUCH more helpful, and offered to honor the warranty replacement with the auth #, without having to charge us for the replacement up front and then getting reimbused, and without paying for freight or service charges.
