My husband and I recently had a great experience at this store, specifically with Maryann. From the start, Maryann was friendly, helpful, and welcoming to the store and she answered all of our questions! We decided to purchase a mattress and a few items with a delivery date scheduled for 2 weeks later. After a week we decided we wanted to get a bed frame as well, so I called Maryann and asked if it'd be possible to put our delivery on hold to give us some time to go into the store and look for a bed frame. Maryann was very accommodating, made sure to personally see to it that our delivery was paused and made sure to make herself available when we went back to the store to look for a bed frame. We eventually did find a bed frame and Maryann helped us through the process of rescheduling our delivery for two weeks out. Maryann went above and beyond to make sure that we received every discount/benefit we were eligible for, and personally seeing to it that our delivery date was in the system and went smoothly. We just had our order delivered last week and we're thrilled with the items. We definitely plan on visiting the store when we need additional furniture items.

Beware - purchase at San Mateo only if you want to (1) wait 45 minutes while they make multiple errors, charge you the wrong price and forget to order items for large purchases (2) wait an an extra week for delivery because they forget to notify you.

The physical store is GREAT... but the new sales associates and store manager are respectively untrained and completely unfeeling after wasting hours and weeks of your time.

Scandinavian Design charges premium/high-end prices but San Mateo gives low-end customer service. Shop online or go to the San Jose branch where we had a positive buying experience.

I recently purchased a recliner sofa from Scandinavian Designs, and Meiling was exceptional throughout the entire process. When the sofa was delivered with some damage, Meiling went above and beyond to assist with the exchange. She ensured the process was seamless and stress-free, keeping me informed at every step, especially when there were changes in delivery or additional approvals needed from the store manager. Her professionalism, attention to detail, and dedication to customer satisfaction were truly impressive. I highly recommend Scandinavian design store at San Mateo and working with Meiling for a smooth and pleasant shopping experience.

TLDR; after 6 weeks of order placed and 4 week delays, hours of phone calls and emails sent to both corporate and san mateo store, they failed to deliver my dresser and I cancelled my order.

Forget about it. If you value your time and energy, I’d avoid Scandinavian designs at all cost. Please check recent reviews of the store, I know I’m not the only one dealing with issues.

I’ve was dealing with 4 week delays with Scandinavian designs and ultimately cancelled the order. I ordered a $2K dresser from them (vs custom made at different stores) because they promised delivery within two weeks. We just moved in to a new house so we prioritized early delivery as we had all our clothes in suitcases. Instead of ordering online, I figured it might be better if I order through the store directly so I called their sales associate Meiling whom I met when checking the dresser before and placed an order through her. The order process was not at all smooth (I should have known at this point) as it required back and forth on quotes, links she sent me (delayed by a day and she blamed the online team) where I have to make payments for.

First delay: The day before the delivery, I get a phone call from store that the warehouse did not have my dresser so they need to push my delivery date to next week. Annoyed but it happens, so I schedule delivery for next week

Second delay: Next week, I get a phone call that there are no delivery scheduled for my order and they do not have answers to why. The store manager Lorenzo said they should have never promised early delivery date because it normally takes 3-4 weeks minimum. I asked, can you please make sure we get our dresser next week, in which he replied: “can’t promise for sure but confident.”

Third delay: we actually got a delivery notice the day before. When the delivery arrived, I noticed the product was damaged. I’m pretty frustrated at this point but refused the delivery due to the damage. Note, the store doesn’t open until 11am so I’m dealing with online customer team because delivery happened at 9am. While they are very nice and responsive, I learned that they ultimately work with local showrooms so whatever the issue is, I had to go through SM brick and mortar store anyways. The corporate customer support team and the store has 0 communication channels so everytime I’m calling either of them, I need to explain the whole situation from the start. I give them a call at 11am. General manager Lorenzo is out on vacation. Another sales associate says he will reach out to another manager in store. I don’t hear back for hours. Gave a call back and the manager in store says she never got a note to give me a call back (sigh). I explain the whole situation again and she places an delivery order for next week

Fourth delay: I get a phone call from the third party delivery service. He tells me that the warehouse doesn’t even have my dresser so he’s not sure why the store told me my dresser is getting delivered. I texted Meiling asking what happened and she says she’s not sure why the delivery guy called me before calling her (but why does that make a difference? Ultimately they can’t fulfill my order AGAIN!) Another call from Lorenzo. Surprise - They cannot fulfill delivery. They offer 4% off my order as a compensation and my time, what a joke. At this point, I would have gotten custom orders delivered from other stores. There has already been so much delay that purchasing anything else would take longer.

I wait for couple more days until I decided that I am done dealing with their incompetence and lies - called to cancel the order. I almost ordered some custom couches from them too so lesson learned and maybe I dodged a bullet.

I would go out of my way to recommend against ordering any furniture from this store to anyone considering Scandinavian Designs. What a nightmare.

Update:

Scandinavian Designs was able to resolve my problem the next day. It did take an extra trip down to San Mateo, but they swapped out the full size mattress for a queen. Gave a star back for the quick resolution, but this is not the first problem I've had with their warehouse. A few months ago I ordered a set of two paintings to be delivered and received two matching paintings. Similar to this I had to make an extra trip to San Mateo to get that swapped.

Initial review:

I bought a sleeper sofa here. The memory foam mattress never quite fully expanded; it always looked squished. They let me exchange it, but the replacement took 3 months to arrive. It just arrived and they ordered the wrong size! It was a full instead of a queen.

Plenty of selections that fit every budget. The salespeople are not pushy. In fact, they are really nice and helpful. Their professional manners make our furniture shopping experience comfortable. We're satisfied with our purchases.

Shout out to Pawel, the most fantastic salesperson, he was there when we purchased our sofa and the delivery crews couldn't make it upstairs. He for-saw our problem, and backed us up by providing alternatives. The end result was beyond satisfaction. We love our substitute couch.

Now we're back and looking for dining chairs!

Bought a Celeste sofa here, but then realized that "spill resistant" usually just means PFAs which are known to cause many health problems. While the couch is nice, I am concerned about my health. I welcome management to respond with evidence that the sofa does not contain PFAs.
